Assessment and Distribution of Pharmaceuticals and Endocrine Disruptors in
Wastewater, Ground Water and Surface Waters of the Gallatin Valley, Gallatin County, Montana
Conducted from 2008-2010, this project looked at the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the both ground water and surface water in Gallatin County and the efficiency of various wastewater treatment approaches to remove these compounds from the waste stream.
Project Goals:
- Document and quantify the ability of different wastewater treatment systems used in the Gallatin Valley to remove PPCPs, and quantify the loading of PPCPs to surface- or ground-water from treated effluent.
- Determine the extent and magnitude of PPCP contamination in surface water and ground water in the valley.
- Recommend options for reducing PPCP contamination of State waters.
Project Status:
Water samples were collected from various ground water and surface water locations in 2008 and 2009. Data analysis and report preparation (including recommendations) is currently in progress with project findings to be included in an Open File Report via the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology. Anticipated release is winter of 2010.
