What is Extension?
Extension is a statewide educational outreach network that applies unbiased, research-based university resources to practical needs identified by the people of Montana in their home communities. Extension is a partnership of Gallatin County, Montana State University and the United States Department of Agriculture financed by Federal, State, and County funds. Our office offers a range of services and expertise in areas such as youth development/4-H, agriculture, community development, natural resources, and yard and garden.

Gallatin County staff is proud to provide services in the following areas:
(click on the areas below for more information)

We are 4-H / Youth Development - 4-H prepares young people to step up to the challenges in their community and the world. Using research-based programming around positive youth development, 4-H youth get the hands-on, real world experience they need to become leaders.

We are Agriculture - Extension helps agricultural producers improve marketing skills and understand risk management, skills essential to financial survival. MSU Extension agriculture and natural resources programs apply university research and resources to help Montana agricultural producers and land owners increase profits, reduce loss, protect our food supply and sustain future resources

We are Community - Extension helps communities address challenges ranging from rapid population growth to economic and social changes affecting rural Montana. Extension strives to help the state's greatest asset: its people.

We are Family and Consumer Sciences - Extension professionals place research-based information at your fingertips. Areas covered include: family and human development, family economics and finances, food safety and nutrition, housing and environmental health.

We are Natural Resources – Extension offers relevant, research-based information to help citizens protect and conserve natural resources. Areas of service and expertise include: wildlife, forestry, water, and wildlife.

We are Yard and Garden – You'll find abundant information and resources designed specifically for Montana gardeners. Our tips will help you create a healthy, attractive garden or landscape and keep it looking good throughout the season or year.
