What is WIC?
The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is a supplemental nutritional program designed to provide nutritious foods for eligible families. The purpose of the program is to assist families with
- free food
- nutrition education
- breastfeeding support, and
- referrals to community resources
In addition, WIC enhances family health by stressing the importance of eating healthy, being active, and getting routine health care.
WIC is a federally-funded program which has been in existence for more than 30 years. There are WIC clinics in each of the United States, District of Columbia, 36 Indian Tribal reservations, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam.
The WIC program also has clinics on overseas American military bases.
Who is eligible?
- Women must have recently delivered a baby or must currently be pregnant or breastfeeding,
- Infants and children under five years old also qualify to apply, and
- Families and individuals must meet income criteria.
