Gardening
Gardening is a fun and rewarding project where you can "reap" the benefits of all you hard work - and satisfy your appetite, too!  The broader field of horticulture includes gardening, but a whole lot more.  In these projects, you will learn about growing and caring for all kinds or plants - vegetable, flowers and more!

GARDENING, LEVEL 1 - 4210
Growing vegetables is easy and fun!  In this introductory level of the project, you will learn that you can garden just about anywhere.  You don't need to live in the country or have a big yard to be a gardener.  If you live in a house, you can probably find an area in your yard.  If you don't have a yard or place for a garden, you can raise vegetables in containers that you can set on a porch, deck, balcony or patio.  In this project, you will learn how to plan out different gardens, how to plant your garden, use different planting techniques, germinate seeds, identify parts of plants, care for your plants, harvest your results, explore careers in gardening and much more!  So, let's get growing!
  Materials:

L   Leader/Helper's Guide, BU7166, $4.00

GARDENING, LEVEL 2 - 4220
In this level, you will explore new ways to grow plants both indoors and out.  You'll have fun learning about hydroponics, air layering, transplanting, and flower arranging.  You'll also learn about controlling pests, testing soil, and using mulches.  And you'll have fun working with friends and expanding your gardening interests.  You should do at least four required activities, three challenge activities, and participate in at least three learning experiences (such as giving a demonstration, participating in a judging activity, taking a tour, exhibiting your project, or attending a workshop) each year to complete this project.  You may take as long as three years to complete this level of the project.  Set high goals for yourself and see just how far you can go!
  Materials:
M   Branching Out, BU7154, $3.75
L   4-H Horticulture Leader's Guide, BU7156, $4.00

GARDENING, LEVEL 3 - 4230
As an experienced gardener, you have learned a lot about plants and the horticulture field.  Whether you grow plants indoors or outdoors, you have a lot to share with others.  In this level, you will have many opportunities to develop your leadership skills, organizational abilities and presentation skills.  You can conduct a gardening workshop, teach younger members how to grow plants, or arrange a tour for you group.  You can even market your horticulture products or work as an intern in a horticulture business.  You'll also learn about growing plants in a cold frame, how to landscape, design some plant experiments, grow herbs, force bulbs, learn about organic and chemical fertilizers and much more.  In this level, you should do at least four required activities, three challenge activities, and participate in at least three of the learning experiences (such as giving a demonstration, participating in a judging activity, taking a tour, exhibiting you project, or attending a workshop) to complete the project.  You may take as long as three years to complete this level of the project.
