In most projects, an independent study phase is provided for those who have spent several years in a project and who are looking for new challenges and opportunities. This level allows a member to take personal initiative to explore topics that have not been previously investigated and still remain enrolled in the project. Members enrolling in the independent study phase of any project should develop a detailed learning plan for their work in the project.
An individual learning plan should include:
l Identifying you area of interest within the project area
l Setting goals (what you want to learn)
l Locating resources (people, publications and materials) that would be helpful in carrying out your independent study project
l Deciding upon the specific experiences, methods, processes, tasks and responsibilities needed to accomplish your goals
l Establishing a realistic timberline for completion
l Carrying out your project learning plan
l Evaluating the outcomes and results and determining what could be improved
Every individualized learning plan should be approved by either a parent or other 4-H adult volunteer. For assistance in developing a personal learning contract, you may want to look at the self-determined project materials or other goal-setting materials. While independent study provides you with lots of flexibility and creativity, it also requires serious planning, implementation and evaluation.
