The veterinary science project is designed to help you better understand animals. Whether you live in a rural or an urban area, a knowledge of animals, animal diseases, and health care is valuable. Veterinary science goes far beyond dealing with just the animal. It is involved in protection of human welfare by applying the art and science of medicine to animals. The improvement of animal health safeguards our food supply as well. Inspection of meat and poultry, along with the care of all food and pet animals, controls diseases which already affect mankind. You are not required to own an animal to enroll in this project, but it would be helpful if you had one available to study.
VETERINARY SCIENCE, LEVEL 1 - 2610
Welcome to the beginning unity of the 4-H veterinary science project! No matter what kind of animal you have, or even if you don't have one at all, this project will help you learn a lot about animals. And it will help you decide if you want to purchase and care for an animal in the future. In this project, you will learn how to identify different breeds of animals, interpret animal behavior, meet animals' basic needs, identify nutrients in feeds, understand the life stage of animals, make you home safe for pets, improve bio-security in you home or farm, identify common veterinary tools, measure medications properly, and a whole lot more. You may take up to three years to complete this level of the project, but each year you should identify as least 4 goals and complete a minimum of 7 of the
activities in Level 1.

VETERINARY SCIENCE, LEVEL 2 - 2620
In this level of veterinary science, you are offered new challenges and opportunities to explore a wide range of topics and activities. In this unit, you will learn to crate health records for your animal, investigate body systems, discover the importance of immunity, explore bio-security measures, examine parasite life cycles, recognize the importance of quality assurance, conduct a food safety experiment, investigate disease-causing agents, apply math and science skills and consider ethics and animal welfare. Like level one, you may take up to three years to complete this level of the project, but each year you should identify at least 4 goals and complete a minimum of 7 of the activities in Level 2.

VETERINARY SCIENCE, LEVEL 3 - 2630
By now, you certainly know more about veterinary science than when you started. And now you should be able to share your experience and knowledge with others through some leadership roles in the project. In this level, you will learn about genetics, how to describe "typical" animal behavior, conduct an experiment about test reliability, compare reproduction in various species, consider the function of body organs and systems, investigate human-animal bonds, recognize the importance of animal population control, explore careers in veterinary science, and a whole lot more. You may take up to three years to complete this level of the project, but each year you should identify at least 4 goals and complete a minimum of 7 of the activities in Level 3.
