What is 4-H & Why Do We Need It?
4-H is available to youth in every county of the nation and provides informal, off-campus (MSU), research-based education. Gallatin County 4-H has approximately 500 members (330 families) enrolled. Each family, once enrolled, receives a monthly newsletter that keeps them informed of current events and project workshops.
The basic philosophy of 4-H is to strengthen the mental, physical, moral and social development of youth, thereby helping them to develop into competent, committed, caring and self-assured adults.
The 4-H symbol is a 4-leaf clover with an H in each leaf. The clover is green which stands for life, springtime and youth and the Hs are white which stands for purity.
The 4-H Pledge: I pledge my HEAD to CLEARER THINKING,
My HEART to GREATER LOYALTY,
My HANDS to LARGER SERVICE, and
My HEALTH to BETTER LIVING for
My Club, My Community, My Country & My World.
Do you or someone you know have a talent or interest to share with the youth of Gallatin County?
4-H is a family affair; parents are encouraged to participate. 4-H is a volunteer-led program. We always need and welcome new leaders, if you or someone you know has an interest to share with our youth, call the 4-H Office at 388-3213.
4-H’s “Learning by Doing” approach is directed toward personal development for boys and girls using real life work experiences and letting youth set their own goals for achievement rather than preset goals that must be met. 4-H is Fun!
4-H began around 1900 as a means of reaching parents with improved farm & home practices but has since developed into a program that provides a wide variety of learning opportunities for all kids, whether they live in the city or in the country. 4-H is diverse; there literally is something for everyone.
The 4-H year begins October 1st of each year and goes through September 30th of the next year.
Youth as young as 6-8 years of age may join as “Cloverbuds”. At age 9, youth may join as regular members and choose any project(s) of interest (from Photography to Horses) to them.
The annual dues are $5 per Cloverbud or $20 per regular member plus a non-refundable $1.00 per project material fee. Call the 4-H Office at 388-3213 or stop by our office at 201 West Madison, Suite 300 (just east of the Lee & Dads Grocery shopping center in Valley Professional Office Building #2) in Belgrade with any questions you may have.
