DEPUTY SHERIFF: The duties of a Deputy Sheriff involve the responsibility for the protection of lives and property and the enforcement of laws and ordinances within Gallatin County. Deputies assist in or conduct the investigation of crimes, the apprehension of violators, and conduct routine patrol operations in accordance with standard Sheriff's Office operating procedures. We are responsible for duties including general law enforcement, civil process service, and search and rescue command. Opportunities for senior deputies are widely varied.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizen; minimum age - 18; Good driving record; Possess or able to possess a Montana driver’s license; Good physical condition; Possess a Montana P.O.S.T. certification or be able to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire; High School Diploma or equivalent. Ability to legally possess a firearm; Have no felony convictions; No domestic abuse convictions; Good verbal and written communication skills: React quickly and effectively to stressful situations; Able to work nights, weekends and holidays; Knowledge and skills in operating computer systems; Clear and concise speech; Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously; Ability to perform essential functions of this position. NOTE: Employment is conditional on
passing a written exam, physical fitness test, psychological exam, pre-employment physical and criminal background check. Must successfully complete the Field Training Officer Program and obtain Montana P.O.S.T certification. Personal conduct and behavior on duty as well as off duty must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public’s trust or confidence in the Sheriff’s Office or its members. This position requires a high level of problem-solving ability, self-initiative and the ability and willingness to work a majority of the time without direct supervision
The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office tests candidates' level of fitness using the Montana Physical Abilities Test (MPAT). To view the summary of the test, refer to the DOJ website. To watch a video overview of the MPAT, click here: YouTube
You must complete the fitness test in 5:30 or better to be considered for employment.
If you feel there may be a medical reason that would prohibit you from taking the Montana Physical Abilities Test, consult a physician prior to January 16, 2012. You are strongly encouraged to consult a physician or other health care professional prior to participating in the MPAT if you have any history or illness that may be aggravated by participation in the testing or if you have questions concerning the testing and your physical abilities.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Possess a high school degree or GED. Additional incentives available for higher education. P.O.S.T. certified applicants welcome. We will accept and consider non-P.O.S.T. certified applicants.

TESTING INFORMATION: Testing and oral board dates are scheduled for the week of January 16, 2012. Applicants must take the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office written exam and fitness test OR may stand on their previous Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office written or fitness scores if completed within the last six months (see contact phone number below to request to stand on scores). The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office does not participate in the Consortium; therefore, no written or MPAT scores will be accepted from the Consortium
or any other agency offering testing. Applications, resume and references, and legible copy of valid driver's license must be turned in to the Bozeman Job Service and received by December 9, 2011 to be considered. SALARY: $3,915.00/monthly + Excellent Benefit Package and Incentives.
WORK HOURS: Hours for this position are varied – law enforcement requires 24-hour coverage, 7 days/week.
