Frequently Asked Questions
What are the responsibilities of the Weed District?
The main responsibilities of the Weed District are to:
Manage noxious weeds on County properties.
Assist county residents in managing noxious weeds by providing information, material, and technical assistance.
Taking of complaints and enforcement and compliance of the noxious weed law.
(See attached document for full listing of responsibilities)

How large is the Weed District and what is the size of the Weed District budget?
The Gallatin County Weed District consists of 5 Board Members, 1 Coordinator (full-time), 1 Administrative Clerk (full-time), 1 Enforcement Specialist (seasonal), 1 Crew Foreman (seasonal), and 6 Spray Technicians (seasonal). The workload is divided into 4 broad categories: 1.  Right-of-way management; 2. Education, grants and technical assistance to the public; 3. Enforcement; 4. Subdivision review. For Fiscal Year 2004 the Weed District received 1.14 mils or approximately $168,690.00. Grants, cash carryover and contract spray work increased that amount.

Why doesn’t the County spray for weeds on the roads in my subdivision?
The road system in Montana can be divided into four main categories. Federal roads (such as the I-90 Interstate), State roads (such as Highway 191), County roads (such as Thorpe Road or Cottonwood Road) and public roads. The Weed District manages the County road system for noxious weeds. With a few exceptions the County road system was established by the1950’s.

Road systems within subdivisions are deeded for public use but are not officially designated County roads. The Weed District does not control noxious weeds along the road systems of subdivisions. The management of noxious weeds along the road systems of subdivisions is either the responsibility of the subdivision’s Home Owners Association (HOA) or, if the HOA is not active, the responsibility of the landowner adjacent to the road.
