Gallatin County Weed Control Rental Program
Purpose:
The Gallatin County Weed Control District is offering a weed sprayer rental program to Gallatin County residents. This program was set up to make weed spraying equipment available, and to help the residents of Gallatin County to control noxious weeds on their property. The rental fee is used to maintain the rental equipment in good working order and to update equipment when needed. There are four types/sizes of liquid chemical sprayers available for rent. An appointment to rent these sprayers can be made through the Gallatin County Weed Control Office. Remember to call ahead as the sprayers go fast in certain times of the year.

Terms and Conditions:
The rental charges are assessed per rental period. On Monday-Friday,   the rental period last 24 hours from the time of pick up. Over the week-end, the rental period lasts from the Friday afternoon pick-up time until Monday morning at 8:00 a.m..
Pick-up and Drop-off times are 8:00-9:0.0 a.m., and 3:00-4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday at the Gallatin County Weed Control Shop. For week-end use, pick up the spray unit between 3:00-4:00 p.m. on Friday and return it by 8:00 a.m. on Monday. To facilitate the pick up procedure, please return the spray equipment on the top of the hour so it will be ready for the next renter.  Prompt pick-up and return times are required.
A Rental Agreement with Gallatin County Weed Control District must be signed by the renter before the rental unit can be picked up.
The spray unit must be returned clean and with spray tank rinsed. To ensure that rental units remain in proper and safe operating condition, please advise the weed office of any problems that occurred during use. The renter is responsible for all damages not caused by normal operational wear and tear.

READ AND FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS

Use herbicide according to label directions.  Do not spray non-target plant species such as trees, shrubs, alfalfa, crops, gardens or caragana bushes.

Do not spray near or into water such as rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands, riparian zones, irrigation canals/ditches or wells.

Spraying herbicides can be hazardous. Wear liquid proof gloves, coveralls and liquid proof boots when handling herbicides. Shower after using herbicides. Wear a clear face shield or goggles when mixing herbicides. Read and follow all herbicide labels. Never wash contaminated clothing with regular wash. Wash contaminated clothing separately with an extra cycle of just detergent and water between washings.
1.      By law it is required that herbicides be used according to their label.
READ AND FOLLOW THE ENTIRE CHEMICAL LABEL.

2.      Before adding herbicide to the tank, fill the tank ½ full with fresh water. Start the engine, and throttle up to ensure that all broadjet (Boombuster nozzles) and handguns are functional. Ensure that the bypass/agitation line is functioning. The bypass/agitation line is the return line that feeds back into the tank. It can be observed by water flowing back into the tank. Turn the engine off, or continue on to calibrate the handgun.

3.      Use the following procedure when adding herbicide to the tank.
Determine approximately how many acres you are going to spray. For example if you are using the broadjet on sprayer 150-2, you can cover 3 acres with 150 gallons traveling at 3 MPH
Calibrate the sprayer to determine how much herbicide to add to the tank. For the Boombuster nozzles, use the GPAs listed above under the appropriate spray unit traveling at the approximate speed you wish to spray. Since everyone is different, they will use the handgun in a different manner. To compensate for this everyone will need to calibrate the handguns for themselves. To do this, follow steps 1-6 on the calibration square available at the Gallatin County Weed Control Office.
Read the herbicide label to determine the rate per acre of the herbicide, and follow steps 7-9 on the calibration sheet.
Start the engine (on low throttle). Allow to run for a few seconds. Throttle up to maximum RPMs. Make sure there is agitation in the tank.
Add herbicide and/or surfactant to the tank. Allow to agitate for 2 to 3 minutes.
Add the rest of the water.

4.      Handgun and Boombuster nozzles cannot be used together in the same operation unless the operators hand gun calibration is the same as the Boombuster calibration. The gallons per acre are usually different between the individual handgun GPA and Boombuster GPA, therefore the amount of herbicide added to the tank is different. Using the handgun and the Boombuster nozzle together in the same operation can effect the quality of weed control, unless you calibrate the handgun to match the GPA of the Boombuster nozzle.

5.      Remember: Add half of the water into the tank, put in the correct amount of herbicide, then add the rest of the water. Spray the weeds in the same manner used when calibrating the sprayer to ensure that the proper rate of chemical is placed on the weeds.

6.      RINSE OUT THE SPRAYER AND ALL LINES WITH THE SAME AMOUNT FRESH WATER THAT IS RECOMMENDED UNDER THE SPRAYER DESCRIPTION. Do not empty all the water on one spot, spread it over a large area so a high concentration is not placed on a small area. Be careful of non-target vegetation as the rinse water can have some chemical in it.

REMEMBER TO USE HERBICIDES IN A SAFE AND PRUDENT MANNER
TO PROTECT YOU AND THE ENVIRONMENT, READ AND FOLLOW THE
ENTIRE CHEMICAL LABEL, IT’S THE LAW!
